What Is Check-in?

Check-in at an airport is the process through which a passenger confirms their travel with the airline and completes the required formalities before the flight.

Is Check-in Important for Travellers?

Yes. Check-in is important because:

  • You generally need to complete check-in before travelling on a flight.
  • After completing check-in, you receive or can access your boarding pass, which is required for boarding the aircraft.
  • Depending on the airline, you may be able to select or change your seat.
  • You may be able to request additional baggage or manage other travel preferences.
  • You can usually check in online (web check-in) or at the airport.

How Can You Check In?

Online check-in:

  • You can check in through the airline’s website or app, where available.
  • The airline may ask for your PNR and last name or email address to retrieve your booking.

Airport check-in:

  • You can use a self-service kiosk, where available.
  • You can also visit the airline’s check-in counter.
  • After completing check-in at the airport, you may receive a printed boarding pass.

If you have already completed web check-in, you may still be able to make certain changes or complete additional formalities at the airport, depending on the airline and booking.

Check-in Closing Time

Airlines generally have a fixed check-in closing time. If you do not complete check-in within the permitted period, you may not be accepted for that flight.

Check-in is different from security screening. Check-in is handled by the airline, while security screening is a separate airport security process.
