What Is Checked Baggage?

Checked baggage, in airport terms, is the luggage that travellers hand over to the airline for transportation in the aircraft’s baggage hold. Unlike cabin baggage, passengers cannot carry checked baggage inside the aircraft cabin.

This baggage is generally larger or heavier and cannot be stored under the front seat or in the overhead compartment. Travellers must hand it over at the airline’s check-in counter or baggage-drop facility, where its weight and dimensions may be checked according to the airline’s rules.

Refer to the image below to understand which baggage you can carry inside the cabin and which baggage you need to hand over at the check-in counter.

Important Things to Remember for Travellers

  1. Travellers should check the baggage allowance mentioned on their ticket, booking confirmation, or the airline’s official website.
  2. Airlines specify the permitted weight and number of checked baggage pieces. For example, some airlines may allow 15 kg per adult, but the allowance varies depending on the airline, route, and ticket type.
  3. Airlines may also offer extra baggage services for an additional charge if travellers need to carry more luggage, subject to the airline’s rules.
  4. Ensure your checked baggage does not contain any prohibited or restricted items. Check the airline’s official baggage policy before checking in your luggage.
  5. Follow the baggage allowance rules for hassle-free travelling.
