What Is a Terminal at an Airport?

A terminal in airport terms is a building or designated area of an airport where passengers complete various travel formalities before or after their flight.

Airports may have one or more terminals, often identified as Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3, and so on.

What Do Travellers Need to Know About Terminals?

If you are about to fly, you need to know which terminal your flight departs from.

For example, Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi has Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3.

If your flight is departing from Terminal 1, you need to reach Terminal 1 for the required check-in, security and boarding formalities. You should not assume that you can complete these formalities from another terminal.

The terminal information may be mentioned on your flight ticket, booking confirmation or boarding pass. However, travellers should also check the latest information from the airline because terminal assignments can sometimes change.

Some airports have only one terminal, while larger airports may have multiple terminals to handle passenger traffic and different types of flights.

Note: At the airport entry, your ticket or boarding pass and identity document may be checked. If you arrive at the wrong terminal, you may be directed to the correct terminal, but it is the passenger’s responsibility to reach the correct terminal on time.
